This is not a new trick, but you may not be aware of it. It is a faster way to enter formulas. In fact, this feature exists since Lotus 1-2-3 back in the 1980s.

Entering Excel Formulas With Keyboard Shortcuts
If you are a heavy keyboard user, you should learn this method for entering formulas.
Let say you need to enter a formula in B4 a shown in picture above. Below is how you enter the formula fast:
- Start in cell B4. Type either a = or a +. If you regularly use the numeric keypad, it is easier to type a plus sign.
- Press the up arrow three times. Excel shows a flashing cursor around cell B1. The provisional formula in B4 shows =B1.
- Type a + sign to continue the formula. The flashing box disappears. The focus returns to cell B4. If you want to point to cell B2, type the up arrow two times. The provisional formula now shows =B1+B2.
- Type a – sign.
- Type the up arrow to move to B3.
- Type the Enter key to accept the formula.
If you try it, you will find that typing =<Up><Up><Up> + <Up><Up> – <Up> <Enter> is far faster than using the mouse to enter the formula.
